Council Member Barbara Gurtner grew up on a working farm in southern Illinois. Her education includes a Bachelor of Science in applied science from Southern Illinois University, as well as post-graduate studies and a teacher's certification from Eastern Illinois University. Barbara earned a Graduate Realtor's Institute certification and attended numerous Small Business Administration seminars.
Over the years, Council Member Gurtner has worked with governmental agencies, federal, state and local regulators as an assistant asset manager for a large national mortgage company based in Houston. She managed improved assets, raw and developed land, renovation of facilities for corporate and branch offices, and negotiated leases for commercial assets all across the United States.
Barbara also has twelve years' experience in sales and marketing of residential properties, single, multi-family, new construction and conversions in Houston, Maryland and Virginia. She said this has given her an outstanding perspective of growth and change in communities. Council Member Gurtner moved to the Texas coast in 1995 and became involved in the Rockport community. In 2000, along with her husband, Jim Gunnin, she started a search firm in Rockport specializing in worldwide recruitment and placement of executives, managers and professionals in the chemical and food & beverage industries. In 2005, Barbara created the WWN (Wonderful Women's Network), the Rockport-Fulton based community e-newsletter and website.
Currently, Council Member Gurtner volunteers for and is a member of the Rockport Center for the Arts, the Texas Maritime Museum, the Aransas County Education Foundation, Friends of the Pool, Rockport Yacht Club, and the Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce. She is part of the Little Bay Sea Queens, and sits on the boards of Rockport Little Theatre and Unity Church.
Additionally, Council Member Gurtner serves as liaison to the Tree & Landscape Committee, the Tourism and Development Council, and the Planning and Zoning Commission as required. She is also alternate liaison to the Keep Rockport Beautiful Advisory Board and the Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program.
